যৌতুক প্রথার সবচেয়ে ভয়াবহ দিক হলো এর সামাজিক ও মানসিক প্রভাব। অনেক দরিদ্র পরিবার কন্যাসন্তানের বিয়ে দিতে গিয়ে ঋণের বোঝায় জর্জরিত হয়ে পড়ে। আবার অনেক ক্ষেত্রে যৌতুক কম হওয়ার অজুহাতে কনের ওপর নির্যাতন, অপমান এমনকি প্রাণনাশের ঘটনাও ঘটে। এতে নারীর নিরাপত্তা ও মর্যাদা মারাত্মকভাবে ক্ষুণ্ন হয়। বিয়ের পরও যৌতুকের দাবি চলতে থাকলে দাম্পত্য জীবন বিষাক্ত হয়ে ওঠে, যার প্রভাব পড়ে পুরো পরিবারের ওপর।
এই প্রথা নারীর প্রতি বৈষম্যকে আরও শক্তিশালী করে। সমাজে কন্যাসন্তানকে অনেক সময় বোঝা হিসেবে দেখা হয়, কারণ ভবিষ্যতে তার বিয়েতে যৌতুক দিতে হবে—এই ভয় কাজ করে। এর ফলে শিক্ষায় অবহেলা, অল্প বয়সে বিয়ে এবং আত্মসম্মানবোধে ঘাটতি দেখা যায়। একটি সমাজ কখনোই উন্নত হতে পারে না, যদি তার অর্ধেক জনগোষ্ঠী অবমূল্যায়িত হয়।
